  1. Research shows that 75-80% of perimenopausal women suffer from vasomotor symptoms. These include hot flushes and episodic sweating often combined with disturbed sleep. In-turn this relates to a decreased state of well-being.

On average women will suffer from these symptoms for 4-5 years. 10% of women have more severe symptoms, which may persist for as long as 10 years after menopause. The majority of women put up with these symptoms but about 25% seek medical help, which includes hormone replacement therapy (HRT). Others turn to alternate therapies, which cover a wide spectrum from behavioural therapy to supplements.

Metamorphosis has had great success at alleviating hot flashes in menopausal women as well as treating blushing. We use a customized approach, Metatherapy, which is a combination of cognitive behavioural therapy (CBT) and hypnosis. We are looking for women who suffer from hot flashes to partake in a pilot study on the efficacy of our treatment on reducing or eliminating hot flashes and improving sleep patterns. Please feel free to blog us or e-mail if you have any general inquires or questions about the study.

  2. If you have great success why are you bothering with a study?

  3. Hanna,

    Thank you for your question.

I am afraid the answer is a long one, and falls into two categories. The first is that as a medical clinic we deal extensively with Doctors and other medical practitioners. As a group they rightfully question results and to put it bluntly want to see the proof before they will adopt, recommend, or refer patients for a new treatment regime. Personally, I am appreciative that they are like this rather than jumping onto any passing bandwagon.

There have been a number of studies conducted in recent years that point to the positive effects of cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT) and hypnosis in the treatment of hot flashes. We did not participate in any of these studies and although they reflect our experience we want to expand the research to a larger sampling of women.

Secondly, and perhaps more importantly to sufferers of hot flashes, the study will allow us to hone our techniques. Each participant will be assigned a clinician who will use a specific technique to help reduce the hot flashes. At the end of the study we will analyze the results and should then be able to refine the technique as well as prove its effectiveness.

A bonus is that with the use of CBT and hypnosis there is an overall improvement in the quality of life. This includes a reduction in stress and better sleep patterns, and we all know the advantages of being more relaxed and getting a proper nights sleep. As strange as this may sound many of our patients find that after a few sessions of treatment a hot flash becomes a weathervane of stress inducing triggers. With the process in hand they are able to quell the hot flash and start to deal with the cause, ie the stress inducing event.

I hope this answers the question, and feel free to give us a call 416-222-0136.
